Conceptual Work - Dry Garden Planting
I was tasked with creating a semi-secluded space and microclimate within the context of a larger landscaped garden. The client was keen to incorporate rare plant species and specimen trees that would provide year round interest and require minimal watering and maintenance.
The gravel garden is inspired by the concept of a dry river bed; curving swathes and islands of planting represent the green banks whilst the meandering gravel paths represent the arid river bed. Paths run across the length and breadth of the garden and encourage movement and exploration of the space, revealing hidden view points and glimpses across the expanse of the garden. Key plants, grasses and specimen trees create different focal points throughout the year; as deciduous plants die back, the heights and shapes of the borders change with the seasons, allowing visitors to enjoy a different experience of the garden each time they visit.
A predominantly warm floral colour story of, yellow, orange and deep pink is juxtaposed against the cooler blues and purples of groups of summer flowering shrubs and bulbs.
